Galaxy Mega: The Ship That Carries Its Own Head

A broad spaceship stands up, its passenger becomes its face, and flight equipment turns into weapons. Follow the original Galaxy Mega design into the DX toy.

The finished design keeps broad curves from the ship along both legs.

A circle stands up

A broad blue disc seems an unlikely starting point for this tall robot. Yet the Mega Ship already has the essentials on its surface: the red chest emblem sits near the middle, and the pointed bow is divided into two future feet.

In Denji Sentai Megaranger, five high-school students become the team fighting Neziregia. Their Galaxy Mega forms when Mega Ship and the much smaller Mega Shuttle perform “Electromagnetic Combination.” The artbook records its first robot transformation in episode 2. Artbook, pp. 046–047.

The original Japanese Bandai DX Galaxy Mega lets you follow the change. The ship opens around its center; its sides unfold into legs while the arms move out beside the chest. Watch the curved blue panels. They remain plainly visible along the shins, so the robot never quite loses its round spacecraft outline. Original DX transformation photographs.

From broad ship to tall robot

The hull becomes legs

The passenger becomes the face

The ship carries its missing part inside its bow. The cutaway drawings show Mega Shuttle sitting in a dedicated bay. This little white-and-blue craft supplies the head rather than another large section of the body. Artbook, p. 047.

Look at the helmet drawings next to the shuttle. The cockpit windows remain above the eyes, and the nose becomes a projecting brim. On the toy, lifting the nose cover reveals the silver face underneath. The small passenger has been carrying the robot’s expression all along.

Flight equipment becomes battle equipment

The smaller craft has more to contribute. Its Shuttle Booster becomes the Booster Rifle, moving from underneath the shuttle into Galaxy Mega’s hand. The pale, elongated shape makes the connection easy to follow between the flight drawing and the armed toy. Artbook, p. 047.

Another useful object waits beneath Mega Ship. The Mega Shield attaches to the ship’s underside; the original DX accessory slides open into a full circle when removed. In the story, the shield also serves during atmospheric entry. The robot’s long Mega Saber carries a circular detail at its hilt, repeating the rounded shapes of the ship and shield. Artbook, p. 046.

One booster, two jobs

The underside becomes a shield

A different circle on the chest

Even the chest once carried a circle. Preparation drawing 1 shows a round centerpiece surrounded by much of the familiar helmet, shoulders and waist. The artbook identifies it as a preliminary Galaxy Mega drawing with a different chest. It does not explain why that feature changed. Early Sketches, p. 146.

Compare it with the finished toy’s bright red center. The round motif has given way to the team emblem, a shape that stays visible on both ship and robot. The artbook also records built-in light and sound in the DX release; the illuminated photograph shows how the chest becomes a focal point in the physical toy. Artbook, p. 046.

The ship survives another combination

Galaxy Mega can acquire a second layer. Joined with Delta Mega, it becomes Super Galaxy Mega: larger arms, shoulder-mounted Gatling Blasters and tall leg armor surround the blue robot. This combination uses both DX toys, beyond the contents of the Galaxy Mega box. Artbook, p. 049; original DX combination.

Follow the blue curves beside the legs one last time. Beneath the new armor, the broad ship is still there. A shuttle became its face, its underside became a shield, and its hull became a standing figure—without erasing the spacecraft you first met.
